Job and Faith in the Midst of Suffering

The Wisdom books open in our series with Job, a book that refuses slogans. Job is blameless and upright, yet he suffers catastrophic loss. His friends offer tidy theology that cannot survive the facts. God finally speaks, not with a flowchart, but with a revelation of His wisdom and power.

Job teaches that suffering is not always punishment for personal sin. Jesus later rejects that same false equation in the case of the man born blind (John 9:1-3). The righteous may suffer. The wicked may prosper for a time. Faithfulness is not a transaction that purchases ease.

Honesty and reverence

Job's laments are raw, yet he will not curse God. He wrestles. He questions. He also confesses, "I know that my Redeemer lives" (Job 19:25). The book makes room for grief without granting permission for accusation against God's goodness.

When God answers from the whirlwind (Job 38-41), Job repents in dust and ashes, not because his pain was imaginary, but because he has seen more clearly who God is (Job 42:5-6). Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.
